Shaker Black Settee
Even though the Shakers rejected ornamentation in their furniture design, they believed that “There is great beauty in harmony”. This bench design is a good example of their sophisticated aesthetic perception. The seat is gracefully shaped, the legs slightly bulge, the spindles and back rest gently taper. Benches like this one were used by the Shakers in their meeting houses. They produced them in different lengths, up to 12 feet long.
This one is made of Maple and painted black.
